Duffy Power, 1970

British blues sorcerer Duffy Power and members of Argent cut an album for CBS in 1971 that never saw daylight—until now. Hell Hound: The Lost 1971 CBS Album lands 23 May 2025 via Think Like A Key Music as a 2-CD set and limited 140-g vinyl. The collection restores producer Rod Argent & Chris White’s original 11-track running order and appends a full disc of demos, alternates, and glossy 2024 mixes drawn from the sessions.

Today’s advance single, “Sally Plain” (2024 Mix / Single Edit), spotlights Power’s aching vocal over Danny Thompson’s upright bass, Sam Mitchell’s slide guitar, and Bob Henrit’s steady groove—freshly remixed from the original Central Sound multitracks. Stream it now on Apple and Bandcamp.

Pulled from Argent & White’s Nexus vault, the project restores the exact 11-song running order the producers delivered to CBS in ’71 and adds a companion disc of demos, alternates, and brand-new 2024 mixes. Highlights include:

  • “Hell Hound” – Robert Johnson reimagined with Ollie Halsall’s stinging lead guitar
  • “Hummingbird” – a Leon Russell deep-soul cover sweetened by London’s top session singers
  • Liner-note deep dive – 20-page booklet by historian Colin Harper chronicling Power’s “steaming hellhound” years, complete with studio logs and Argent & White’s recollections
“Lightning in a bottle—there’s so much soul in Duffy’s voice it feels criminal it took 50 years to hear the whole album,” Argent writes in the notes.
