A visit to a Paris museum became a twenty-song album and a Greenwich Village stage show. Robert Callender’s Le Musée de l’Impressionnisme returns on December 11, 2026 in an artist-approved 50th anniversary edition from Think Like A Key Music, newly remastered by Prof. Stoned and receiving its first official CD release.

Robert Callender remembers “Claude Monet” beginning on a walk through Paris. In 1975, a musician friend persuaded him to visit the Jeu de Paume. He came away so moved by Monet’s work that, on his walk back along the Seine to the Hôtel Saint-Séverin, a new song was already taking shape.

“I vividly recall walking along the Seine singing what was to become Claude Monet.”

— Robert Callender, from his introduction to the 50th anniversary booklet

Back at his hotel on the Left Bank, he continued composing. Further visits brought further songs. Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Bazille became part of a musical project that would grow into Le Musée de l’Impressionnisme.

The first single, “Claude Monet (A Visionary of Time and Space and the Light),” was released September 25, and its video offers an introduction to Callender’s musical museum.

The single campaign moves from “Claude Monet” (September 25) to “Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec” (October 23) and “Pierre Auguste Renoir” (November 20), ahead of the album’s December 11 release.

From the galleries to Greenwich Village

For Callender, the connection with the painters was personal. Their struggles reminded him of the actors, musicians, dancers, photographers and other artists he knew in New York, all working to make a life from their craft. The songs became a way to connect those two creative communities.

Back in New York, he assembled an ensemble of musicians, singers and dancers. Four songs were recorded at Columbia Recording Studios: “Claude Monet,” “Paul Gauguin,” “Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec” and “Pierre Auguste Renoir.” Callender and manager Sid Bernstein then arranged with studio owner Gil Markle to complete the project at Long View Farm in Massachusetts.

Callender describes seven days of round-the-clock work there, recording with the musicians and cast. Guitarist Mark Suozzo co-arranged the music, played guitar and conducted the band. The completed work brought together soul, jazz, funk, rock, calypso and theatrical narration.

The project also became a stage production at Trude Heller’s in Greenwich Village, where music, dancers and visual art brought Callender’s imagined museum into a physical space. Phonogram International subsequently released the album in the Netherlands in 1976.
