While clearing his childhood home in Sacramento, Anton Barbeau found a cassette fragment that would become “World Calls Love.” During his final days in the house, he wrote “All Thru The Night.” Those songs open and close Come Home To Me: an old idea recovered, and a new one written as he was leaving.

Between them sit twelve more songs, recorded mainly at his home studio in Auburn, California. Following the Dark Mystery Temple trilogy, Barbeau has given himself room to follow individual ideas wherever they lead. There are turns through new wave, piano pop, psychedelia and funk, held together by the songwriter’s appetite for melody.

A California record with familiar company

Sacramento-born Barbeau returned to California after fifteen years abroad in the UK and Berlin. His home studio, the Dark Mystery Temple, is on his wife Julia’s family farm in Auburn. It is one of three California recording locations credited on the album, alongside the Office and the Little Yellow House.

He has brought some familiar collaborators into that setting. Colin Moulding and Dave Gregory of XTC appear, as do Andy Metcalfe, Donald Ross Skinner and Terry Edwards. Allyson Seconds and Rosie Abbott are among the returning voices, with additional vocals from Julia Barbeau and Christy Claes. Michael Urbano’s drum parts were recorded at 2200 Studios in Sausalito, the former Record Plant; Myles Boisen mastered the album.

The result follows more than forty albums’ worth of songwriting and recording. For listeners coming to Barbeau through the XTC connection, this is also an introduction to an artist whose own catalogue stretches across four decades.

The CD edition

Think Like A Key’s CD presents the album in a compact digifile and includes an additional track, an alternate version of “World Calls Love.” The main fourteen-song sequence runs from “World Calls Love” to “All Thru The Night,” preserving the two songs’ connection to the Sacramento house.
